News - Richard Dunwoody - 1000 Mile Challenge update!

Richard Dunwoody

On 10th July at Newmarket Richard Dunwoody completed the 1000 miles in 1000 hours Challenge first achieved 200 years ago by Captain Robert Barclay as a huge bet. Richard did this challenge for four charities – Racing Welfare, Sparks, Spinal Research and the Alzheimer’s Society – and will have raised over ₤200K.

Richard’s fitness surpassed that of Captain Barclay as his time was just over 39 road hours quicker. But in achieving this he suffered massive sleep deprivation as he had to walk a mile in every hour of the duration of the walk which was 42 days….

Richard will now add elements of what he calls this ‘incredible journey going nowhere’ into his motivational speeches. He will talk about how he managed to focus when exhausted and how he found inspiration in walking with some extraordinarily courageous people, such as the Irish jockey J.P. McNamara and Paul Stewart, who had both been told that they would never walk again. He will also tell of some of the well-known people who walked with him, including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ace novelist Jilly Cooper and the thousands of ordinary people who joined him along the way and supported the Challenge.

When added to his experiences as one of the greatest jockeys ever to sit on a racehorse, conquering a virgin route to the South Pole and constantly continuing to push himself to new limits, Richard is an ideal speaker to motivate and inspire people in difficult times.

Also of interest will be the publication in the autumn of his second autobiography, Method in My Madness, the reflections of a professional sportsperson ten years after retirement.
