The tragic and untimely death of Rob Gauntlett, who with James Hopper at the age of 19, became the youngest Britons to climb Everest.

News - James Hooper - My best friend, gone in a second

James Hooper

As you may already know from the recent press coverage, Rob died in an accident during a climbing expedition on Mt Blanc along with his friend James Atkinson on the morning of the 10th January 2009.

Rob and James became the youngest Britons to climb Everest in May 2006 and in November last year, they were named National Geographic 2008 Adventurers of the Year at the society's base in Washington DC.  The award followed their 22,000-mile journey using only human and natural power from the magnetic north to the magnetic south pole to raise awareness of climate change.  They were the first people to achieve the feat.  One of Rob and James’ main aims on their Everest climb and Pole to Pole expedition was not only to achieve their extreme dreams, but also “to ignite a flame in everyone we meet which pushes them to utilise their talents and achieve their ambitions.”

Demonstrating the strength and determination that he has shown in his previous exploits, James will be continuing his speaking career to both corporate and school audiences, in order to carry on empowering and motivating others.  James said of Rob "He really pushed himself as hard as he could. It was only because he was such a motivated and driven person that the accident happened, but those were the qualities that made him so incredible."

Speaking to The Times recently James explained how he will use the memory of Rob’s strength of character as motivation and inspiration to continue the work that they had started together.

Rob died doing something that he loved and he had achieved more in his young life than most of us hope to achieve in a lifetime. He was an inspirational young man.
